A neuropsychological assessment is an in-depth investigation of the current issues that a person is struggling with using a brain-based model. This includes state-of-the-art neuropsychological tests, educational testing, and consultations with all medical and educational professionals who might be working with your child. It involves a series of tasks, puzzles, and questions designed to assess various aspects of brain function, such as memory, attention, problem-solving, and language skills. These tests are often used to diagnose and understand cognitive differences, neurological conditions, or brain injuries. They provide valuable insights into how an individual's brain is functioning and help guide treatment and intervention plans.
-
Other professionals such as teachers, MFTs/LCSWs, and counselors can recommend screenings or suggest certain diagnoses, but they may not be able to officially diagnose. It’s important to know if the diagnosis will be recognized and eligible for services in your area. Oftentimes, those seeking an evaluation often have complex comorbidities and neuropsychological testing is helpful to distinguish different conditions.
